The US has many space satellites, including satellites for communications, navigation, scientific research, reconnaissance and other purposes. Some of the best known US satellites include the GPS (Global Positioning System), the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) series of satellites for weather monitoring, the Landsat series of satellites for land surface monitoring, and the Hubble series of satellites for astronomical research.
