The Yamal-401 satellite, a large commercial geostationary telecommunications satellite, is under the ownership of Russian satellite operator Gazprom Space Systems. The satellite was created by Academician M.F. Thales Alenia Space, a French company that supplied the payload and other satellite components, collaborated with Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems OJSC.

By replacing the Yamal-201 satellite at 90° E, the Yamal-401 satellite increased the capabilities of the existing Yamal telecommunications satellite constellation. It offers modern communication services on C- and Ku-band frequencies in Russia and its neighboring countries.
